Bellydance Day 2004!
Khamsa Fi Ainik!

The Beledi Club's Bellydance Day took place at another (different!) Madison Karate studio this year. Once again, I offered free henna even tho numerous people told me I should be charging. I take that as a good sign, but I really enjoy just sitting back and being pressure free. I used some of the khamsa patterns from Catherine Cartwright-Jones' paper Id al-Adha: The Ecological and Nutritional Impact of the Muslim Feast of Sacrifice, and the Significance of Henna in this Sacrifice" since they went over well last year, protect wearers from evil and don't give anyone the chance to hog time. Although one lady bought a lot of jewelry from me, so I worked around her jewelry with a design from the Navneet book that Zarifa gave me. And one little girl, who sort of sneered at the whole thing- although her mom told her they were temp tattoos and I think that scared her- until I told her it was more like how when Kool-Aid stains your tongue. That made her less scared but the look on her face was a sort of "that is *so* childish" until she got her little Nubian flower. =)
